Trafigura Joins AOG 2025 Amid Infrastructure Expansion in Angola

Trafigura Joins AOG 2025 Amid Infrastructure Expansion in Angola
Multinational commodity trader Trafigura has joined the Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) conference – the country’s premier industry event, scheduled for September 3-4 in Luanda – as a Gold Sponsor. As a commodity supplier with stakes in several impactful infrastructure projects across the country, Trafigura plays an instrumental part in facilitating trade, developing power systems and supporting Angolan economic growth. The sponsorship reflects a broader commitment by the company to improving logistics in Angola.

Trafigura is working toward improving power supply in southern Africa, utilizing Angolan generation projects to support regional mining operations. The company signed an agreement with international engineering firm ProMarks and the Angolan government in 2024 for the development of a cross-border power transmission project. The project comprises a 2,000 MW high-voltage power interconnector which will transmit electricity from hydroelectric projects in Angola to mines across the copperbelts of Zambia and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). Construction will take four years, pending a final investment decision. At AOG 2025, further insights into the impact of projects such as this will be shared.

AOG is the largest oil and gas event in Angola. Taking place with the full support of the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas; the National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency; the Petroleum Derivatives Regulatory Institute; national oil company Sonangol; and the African Energy Chamber; the event is a platform to sign deals and advance Angola’s oil and gas industry. Beyond the power sector, Trafigura works to improve supply chains in the minerals, metals and energy industries. The company is a partner on the Lobito Atlantic Railway consortium – the concessionaire for the operation, maintenance and management of the Lobito Railway Corridor. The corridor connects copperbelts in Zambia and the DRC to international markets via Angola’s Port of Lobito. The first phase of the project involves refurbishing an existing 1,300 km stretch of railway linking Angola and the DRC, while a second phase will connect Zambia.

In November 2024, the consortium took a significant step towards improving the transport capacity of the railway, with the arrival of the first batch of 275 new container wagons. The milestone falls part of broader efforts by the consortium to modernize and expand rail capacity over three years. The delivery follows the signing of the first long-term commercial commitment for the Lobito Atlantic Railway by Trafigura. In February 2024, the company signed a long-term agreement with mining company Ivanhoe Mines to transport up to 450,000 tons per year of minerals via the railway. The agreement covers a period of six years, with Trafigura set to transport between 120,000 and 240,000 tons of copper per annum from Ivanhoe’s Kamoa-Kakula mine in the DRC, starting in 2025.

Trafigura’s AOG 2025 sponsorship aligns with efforts by the company to expand Angolan infrastructure projects and support regional growth. The company’s projects reflect its commitment to improving logistics, connecting regional markets and supporting development across various industries.
