Sonangol Remains Committed to Energy Sustainability
Angola’s national oil company (NOC) Sonangol has announced that it aims to implement more monitoring indicators related to the organization’s sustainability objectives. Through its sustainability objectives, the NOC will strive towards achieving environmental and climate ambitions while creating more efficient operations and increasing investment opportunities and job creation.

The announcement was made by Sonangol’s Head of Environmental Department Ronyse Martins during a technical track at this year’s Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) 2024 conference in Luanda on October 2. During the technical track, Martins examined the NOC’s recently released 2024 Sustainability Report.

“What we have been doing is monitoring indicators related to biodiversity, which is now a great topic related to our sustainability objectives,” stated Martins, adding, “We have been looking for the quality of collaborators in environment and we are interacting with communities where we have our ongoing projects. We publish reports that allow stakeholders to inform themselves on decision-making while aligning our strategies with the objectives of Angola’s sustainability targets.”

According to Sonangol’s 2024 Sustainability Report, Angola has set its sights on maintaining production above one million barrels per day beyond 2027 through investment in new exploration and well recovery. While Angola targets new production growth, the country remains committed to reducing emissions across its oil and gas industry by investing in new technologies and enhancing efficiency in transport and logistics.

As such, balancing operational efficiency with sustainability requires innovative solutions, with the report noting that companies – such as Sonangol – have already committed to advancing low-carbon projects in Angola.
