Petrobras’ Sylvia dos Anjos Joins AOG 2026 as Cross-Atlantic Deepwater Momentum Builds

Petrobras’ Sylvia dos Anjos Joins AOG 2026 as Cross-Atlantic Deepwater Momentum Builds
Angola’s deepwater revival will come to the forefront of discussions at the upcoming Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) Conference and Exhibition, with Sylvia dos Anjos, Executive Director for Exploration and Production at Brazilian state-owned energy corporation Petrobras speaking. Her participation comes as Angola’s offshore sector gains renewed momentum through frontier exploration, deepwater reinvestment and strategic partnerships aimed at sustaining long-term crude production.

Dos Anjos joins the conference at a pivotal moment for Petrobras as the company repositions itself within Angola’s upstream market. In 2025, the company formalized its return to Angola through agreements focused on offshore exploration and South Atlantic cooperation, marking a strategic re-entry into one of Africa’s most promising deepwater markets. The move reflects Petrobras’ broader international expansion strategy, leveraging the company’s technical expertise in ultra-deepwater operations developed across Brazil’s prolific pre-salt basins.

Angola’s deepwater sector is currently undergoing a broader revival, driven by renewed interest from international operators and a wave of new offshore agreements. Projects such as the $6 billion Kaminho development - coming online in 2028 - the successful commissioning of Begonia and CLOV Phase 3 in 2025 and renewed frontier activity across the Namibe and Lower Congo basins are strengthening Angola’s deepwater production dynamics.

International majors are increasingly expanding their offshore presence in response to improved fiscal conditions, regulatory reforms and the scale of Angola’s remaining untapped reserves. Shell, TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil and Chevron have all strengthened positions across Angola’s offshore basins in the last year through farm-ins, exploration studies and infrastructure-led developments.

This trend mirrors broader global upstream dynamics. As geopolitical volatility reshapes energy flows and mature offshore provinces elsewhere face declining returns, operators are seeking basins capable of delivering large-scale discoveries with long-term commercial upside. Angola’s deepwater sector is increasingly being viewed through this lens.

The strategic similarities between Angola and Brazil further strengthen Petrobras’ relevance within this environment. Both countries share geological characteristics shaped by the South Atlantic margin, with offshore formations that have historically delivered world-class discoveries. Angola’s Kwanza and Lower Congo basins are often compared to Brazil’s pre-salt provinces due to comparable subsurface structures and hydrocarbon potential.

These similarities essentially reduce geological uncertainty for operators with Brazilian offshore experience. Petrobras’ technical capabilities in deepwater seismic interpretation, subsea systems and reservoir development are therefore directly transferable to Angola’s offshore environment. As Angola advances frontier exploration campaigns, this experience could play a central role in unlocking new discoveries and improving project economics across technically challenging acreage.

Dos Anjos’ participation at AOG 2026 comes as these themes move to the forefront of Angola’s energy agenda. Her perspectives will provide insight into how one of the world’s leading deepwater producers views Angola’s offshore potential, particularly as the country seeks to balance frontier exploration with reinvestment in existing assets.

With global attention shifting back toward offshore oil development and Angola positioning itself as a long-term deepwater growth market, discussions at AOG 2026 are expected to shape the next phase of investment and collaboration across the sector. Petrobras’ return, combined with Sylvia dos Anjos’ participation, reinforces growing international confidence in Angola’s offshore future.
