Independent Operators Join AOG 2026 as Onshore Exploration Enters New Phase

Independent Operators Join AOG 2026 as Onshore Exploration Enters New Phase
Angola is staging a notable return to onshore exploration, with several campaigns underway aimed at identifying leads through seismic interpretation and drilling activities. Across the country’s inland basins, independent oil and gas companies, including Etu Energias, Afentra and Alfort Petroleum, are advancing projects aimed at revitalizing Angola’s onshore production, setting the stage for a strengthened – and more diversified – production cycle.

Representatives from these companies are participating at the Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) conference and exhibition, taking place September 9‒10 with a pre-conference day scheduled for September 8. Their participation highlights the contribution of agile, growth-focused companies to the development of the country’s onshore oil and gas sector and reflects growing interest in frontier exploration across inland margins.

Angolan oil company Etu Energias is at the forefront of Angola’s onshore resurgence. With interests in a variety of assets, including onshore, shallow water and mature fields, the company has set strategic goals to scale output across offshore blocks while bringing onshore assets into production in the coming years. The company operates onshore Blocks FS, FSST and CON-1, and has outlined 2030 objectives to start production at CON 1 and CON 6 and resume onshore storage and exports at FST via the Quinfuquena terminal.

Offshore, the company recently completed drilling at the Espadarte 7ST2 well at Block 2/05, while strengthened its portfolio through the acquisition of stakes in Blocks 14 and 14K. At AOG 2026, Edson dos Santos, CEO, Etu Energies, is expected to share insight into the company’s diversified exploration and production strategy. Etu Energias is also a Champion Sponsor of the upcoming event.

Meanwhile, Alfort Petroleum is advancing exploration activities in the onshore Kwanza Basin. The company plans to drill an exploration well at Block KON-8 this year and is currently preparing to submit a detailed well proposal to the National Oil, Gas & Biofuels Agency. The upcoming drilling campaign follows the signing of a Production Sharing Contract in 2022 and the subsequent analysis of available data packages, aimed at identifying new targets. Gianni Martins, Managing Director, Alfort Petroleum, joins AOG 2026 to discuss the company’s exploration strategy. Alfort Petroleum is also a Gold Sponsor of the event.

Independent oil and gas company Afentra is also leading exploration efforts in the onshore Kwanza Basin. The company recently announced plans to begin drilling exploration wells in the basin in 2027. At Block KON 4, Afentra is integrating results from a completed eFTG survey to refine subsurface understanding. The company is also acquiring geophysical data to delineate highly prospective acreage.

Offshore, the company plans to reach FID in late 2026 or early 2027 on up to three discoveries at Block 3/24. First oil is planned for 2027. At Block 3/05, the company is drilling the Pacassa SW exploration well. Results are expected in July 2026, following which the Impala well will be drilled. Paul McDade, CEO, Afentra, is expected to share further insight into these activities at AOG 2026.
