Speaking during a fireside chat, Nelumba said COPIA has recently developed three software products in Angola, supported by peer reviews from international partners, as the company expands its technology offering across the upstream sector.

Among these is COPIA Seis, an AI-powered seismic interpretation platform designed to automate elements of subsurface analysis. The technology uses AI and machine learning trained on Angolan geology to identify geological horizons automatically.

“We can cut interpretation time by half using this technology,” Nelumba said. “Our AI is trained using Angolan geology to interpret data automatically, identifying top horizons and base horizons.”

The company has also developed COPIA DynamicSim, which applies machine learning to reservoir simulation. Nelumba said the technology could become increasingly relevant as Angola seeks to maximize recovery from mature assets.

“Angola needs this now because we have mature fields and therefore, we need local software,” he said.

The company is now taking its capabilities beyond Angola, with Nelumba pointing to its recently-established office in Namibia as a platform for regional expansion and potential participation in the country’s emerging upstream industry.

“It is a new frontier. Our products can help unlock Namibia,” he said. “We opened our office showing that Angolan companies are moving international.”

Nelumba positioned the expansion as an example of Angola’s local content policy evolving beyond domestic participation toward the creation of companies capable of exporting Angolan expertise and technology.
