AOG 2024 Highlights Youth’s Vital Role in Energy

AOG 2024 Highlights Youth’s Vital Role in Energy
As the energy industry undergoes transformative changes, organizations, government bodies and companies are actively advocating for enhanced participation of youth in the sector.

As such, this year’s Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) 2024 conference featured a panel discussion titled Next Gen Innovators: Youth-Led Solutions for Sustainability and Digital Transformation. Moderated by NJ Ayuk, Executive Chairman of the African Energy Chamber, the panel discussion harnessed fresh perspectives and innovative ideas of young minds to drive sustainable growth and progress.

“It’s important for companies to attract younger generations because the well-established oil and gas sector needs a new point of view,” stated Flavia Fernandes, IT Technician at Angola’s national oil company Sonangol, adding, “They need newer technology-based perspectives, and we need innovation, and the youth has this to offer.”

The panel noted that, with new innovations and technology on the rise, young individuals have the potential to lead transformative changes and contribute to the future growth and sustainability of the energy sector.

“Integrating new technologies gives the youth a strong advantage when trying to enter the industry. There’s a lot of knowledge that needs to pass down. We need to incentivize experienced players to pass on their knowledge, so we don’t make mistakes that were made before,” stated energy supermajor TotalEnergies Completion Engineer Zaida Francisco.

As the energy sector in Angola expands, it was noted that there are opportunities for youth to participate across the entire value chain. As such, the panel highlighted the potential for companies operating in the sector to expand local content while boosting youth empowerment in Angola.
