Angola Oil & Gas: Turning Projects into Reality
Angola expects an upstream investment drive of up to $60 billion over the next five years as a slew of independents, international oil majors and local firms boost their portfolios across the market. The country’s premier industry event Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) – which returns for its sixth edition from September 3-4, 2025 – has not only catalyzed new investments across the market but offered a space where major operators provide project updates and outline growth strategies. Milestones achieved following participation at the AOG events underscore the value of the conference as a platform for driving projects forward in Angola.

Chevron Announces Gas Production Boost, Brings Sanha Online

During AOG 2024, energy major Chevron announced plans to increase natural gas feedstock by 600 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) to the Angola LNG plant. Chevron’s Managing Director: Southern Africa Strategic Business Unit Billy Lacobie said that increased feedstock would be derived from the Sanha Lean Gas Connection Project, and by association, Block 0 and Block 14, offshore Angola. Chevron brought the Sanha Lean Gas Connection Project online just 2 months later, with first gas flowing in December 2024. Through the company’s participation at AOG 2024, Chevron was able to provide a project update, while outlining future developments plans offshore Angola.

ANPG Outlines Block Opportunities, Awards Acreage Onshore Angola

Angola’s upstream regulator the National Oil, Gas & Biofuels Agency (ANPG) announced at AOG 2024 that it plans to award 15 new oil and gas concessions in the coming months, bringing the total number of awarded concessions under the country’s six-year licensing strategy to 47 since 2019. Since the announcement, the ANPG has signed new deals. Nigerian multinational energy firm Oando PLC was awarded operatorship of onshore Block KON 13 in Angola’s Kwanza Basin. The deal marks the company’s entry into Angola. Additionally, ACE Energy and Power Consultants, Walcot Group and Prime Africa Trade submitted their proposals to become operators of nine onshore blocks. Exploration firm Red Sky Energy also secured a 35% stake in Block 6/24.

SLB Announces Luanda Performance Center Launch  

Delivering a presentation at AOG 2024, global technology company SLB announced its plans to inaugurate an Integrated Performance Excellence Center in Luanda. In January 2025, SLB officially launched its Africa Performance Center. The center caters to the entire lifecycle for oil and gas projects in Angola, supporting production efficiency and maximizing economic recovery from Angolan oilfields.

Azule Energy, Sonangol Drive Decarbonization With Biorefinery Deal

International energy company Azule Energy signed a deal with Angola’s national oil company (NOC) Sonangol at AOG 2023 to collaborate on decarbonization initiatives. In 2024, the companies announced that they are collaborating to decarbonize the Luanda Refinery – the country’s sole operating refinery. The partners agreed to assess the feasibility of constructing a biorefinery at the existing complex, with both firms providing the required technical and operational support for its development. 

Angola and Namibia Sign Cooperation MoU, Leverage Bilateral Ties in O&G

During AOG 2022, Angola’s Ministry of Mineral Resources, Petroleum and Gas signed a deal with Namibia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy to enhance bilateral cooperation in the oil and gas sector. Since the agreement, both countries have strengthened collaboration in the energy industry, seeking to leverage existing relations to boost their respective oil and gas markets.

In March 2024, Namibia’s former-President Nangolo Mbumba announced that the company would utilize Angola’s oil and gas framework as a guideline for industry development. The countries established a bi-national commission to advance collaboration in the oil and gas industry. Additionally, a tripartite agreement was signed between the Namibian Ports Authority and the respective NOCs of Angola and Namibia to establish an integrated logistics base in Namibia to support oil and gas trade.
