7 High-Impact Wells Drilled in Angola Between 2019-2023
Strategic initiatives and ongoing projects in Angola’s oil and gas industry will take center stage during this year’s Angola Oil & Gas (AOG) 2024 conference – taking place in Luanda from October 2-3. This exclusive event offers unparalleled opportunities to engage with influential leaders and explore business opportunities within Angola’s rich oil and gas sector.
AOG is the largest oil and gas event in Angola. Taking place with the full support of the Ministry of Mineral Resources, Oil and Gas; the National Oil, Gas and Biofuels Agency; the African Energy Chamber; and the Petroleum Derivatives Regulatory Institute, the event is a platform to sign deals and advance Angola’s oil and gas industry. The Grenadier-1 Well: 2023
Energy major TotalEnergies spudded the Grenadier-1 probe on Block 20/11 in July 2023. The company’s drilling activities are targeting a similar pre-salt carbonate structure to the Golfinho discovery, which is situated roughly 10km from Grenadier-1. The spudding of Grenadier-1 follows a signed sale and purchase agreement with the country’s state-owned Sonangol in 2019.
The Bavuca Sul-1 Well: 2022
In November 2022, ExxonMobil made a new hydrocarbon discovery at the Bavuca Sul-1 exploration well, offshore Angola. The well is situated in Block 15 and now produces 40,000 barrels per day (bpd). Due in part to the discovery, the U.S. major announced plans in March 2023 to invest $200 million to drill offshore frontier exploration wells in the Namibe basin by the end of 2024. In May 2024, the company announced a new discovery at the Likembe-01 research well, representing the first on the block in two years.
The Cuica Well: 2021
In Block 15/06, Eni started production at its Cuica project in July 2021, less than six months after its initial discovery. With an estimated 200-250 million barrels of oil in place, the Cuica project comprises Eni’s second-largest field within the Cabaça development area in Angola. The Cuica field was developed as a tie back to Block 15/06’s Armada Olombendo FPSO unit and has a daily production capacity of 10,000 bpd.
The Ondjaba01 Well: 2021
Using the Maersk Voyager drillship, TotalEnergies achieved a world record drill depth of 3,628m for the Ondjaba wildcat well in Block 48 in 2021. The ultra-deepwater exploration well is just one of several exploration initiatives being driven by the major, who, in 2022, announced a multi-energy strategy in the country including the $850 million Begonia oilfield development in Block 17/06.
The Agogo-01 Well: 2019
The Agogo-01 well – part of the Integrated West Hub development in Block 15/06 – was discovered in 2019 and brought online in 2020, merely nine months after its discovery. The high-impact well kicked off the development of the Integrated West Hub project, which achieved FID in 2023. In March 2024, the lifting and installation of the first modules of the FPSO for the development were completed and production is on track for mid-2026.
The Ndungu-01 Well: 2019
In addition to the Agogo field, energy major Eni brought the Ndungu field – also located in Block 15/06 and part of the Agogo Integrated West Hub development – onstream in February 2022. The well was discovered in 2019. In May this year, energy company Azule Energy awarded oilfield services company Saipem an $850 million contract for the development of the field.
